Transformation of a former garage into a cultural complex and media library
Milan, ITALY | 2009

Surface: 7 300 m²
Cost: 130 M€
The project to transform the former Garage Traversi (1930) in Milan is an example of an operation capable of offering a new perception of the historic building and enhancing its original structure of reinforced concrete.
The original structure becomes an intermediate element between the exterior and the interior, a material but also symbolic threshold between the future city and the present city, in continuity with the past.
The city enters the building through the extension of Bagutta Street from San Babila Square as the starting point for a spectacular internal route. Indeed, a vertical spiral crosses the building diagonally from the street to the roof terrace, creating a system of double height spaces.
It is a kind of plug-in between city and building materialized with the idea of n urban-scale route inside the cylindrical volume of the 1930s, transformed into a continuous space.
The building is spread vertically, offering on several levels cultural, commercial, leisure, restaurant, tourism and condo-hotel apartments.
